Port O’Brien is the brainchild of Van Pierszalowski, a singer/songwriter from Big Sur, California and part-time fisherman off of Kodiak Island in Alaska. He may be giving up his fishing summer job real soon. The Wind and Swell is technically their second album, but it will be the one to put them on the map. I really like that Van stops while playing "My Humps" and says something like "I can't do this anymore". And there's definitely a thriving scene out here. My favorites right now include the Dodos (go see these guys live!), the Morning Benders, the Finches, and Beatbeat Whisper. Nedelle, the Ian Fays, the Light Footwork, and Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone are other local acts worth checking out. Then, of course, there are the much high profile people like John Vanderslice, Mark Kozelek, Mark Eitzel/ American Music Club and Kelley Stoltz.
