I have a virus on my computer that has crippled it worse than the most crippling diarrhea can cripple a human. I’m beginning to believe those Mac vs. PC commercials. They should create one where the guy that plays PC gets diarrhea so bad that he can’t even stand up. The guy that plays Mac can say, “Hey PC, let’s go play some basketball” while PC sits there doubled over holding his stomach, incapable of moving at all for fear of dropping a Havana omelet in his underpants. That would paint a perfect picture of my PC’s productivity right now.
Why am I telling you this? Well, I can’t search for new music, so I’m going to tell you about a guy I’ve been listening to for a number of years: Stephen Kellogg and his supporting band the Sixers. Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers write a blend of alt-country rock music with a poppy edge. Fans of Josh Ritter or Ryan Adams should feel at home.
I’ve seen them once in concert and there were a lot of chicks there. These chicks were pretty young, so I started to feel guilty about liking the band, but upon further review, I don’t care. I like their music and they’re a fun band to see live. Kellogg isn’t afraid to pull out the occasional Enrique Iglesias cover, show off his kazoo prowess, or make fun of his bandmates.
Their latest self-titled album, which was released well over a year ago, is strong to quite strong. It features standout tracks “Maria”, “You’ve Changed”, and “Start the Day Early”. You can stream all of the band’s music at www.stephenkellogg.com. While you’re there, make sure you check out earlier tracks like “Southern State of Mind” and “When She Leaves”. They are my two favorites.
Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers also have a new album coming out July 10 called Glassjaw Boxer, available for pre-order now. It promises to be another strong showing from a rock-solid band that’s received consistent play on my iPod for many years.
Here are a couple nuggets to give you a taste of their live show. I particularly enjoy the comical cover of Stairway to Heaven.
Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers - My Sweet Carolina (Ryan Adams cover)
Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers - Girlfriend as Pretty as You
Speaking of Josh Ritter, there’s also a nice little track at his fan site called “Lil Ole Wine Drinker Me” with Ritter and Kellogg performing together backstage.

Once you get past all the laughing in the crowd, that actually turns into a solid cover.
I love whenever Goose dances during Thirteen haha.
