Somewhere, Zach Braff is contemplating his next movie. Most likely, it will involve some disaffected character who comes to terms with his own insignificance or place in life. There will be another character, probably a petite girl with specific yet cute quirks, who comes along at the perfect time. And naturally, there will be a scene where he listlessly stares out a rain drenched window while a song plays. While this may seem depressing, within the context of the movie it will seem optimistic and life altering. And I’m calling it right now. “Bella of the Rocks” by The Cripple Lilies will be that song.
The Cripple Lilies are sure to become the next Iron & Wine, as Chad Bishop and Elizabeth LoPiccolo write uplifting and loving folk, but the jazz influences are a bit more prominent than the blues of Iron & Wine. The softly strummed acoustic guitar and minimal drums and bass leave the vocal harmony and lyrics to take the lead in “Bella on the Rocks.” The narrator of the story is waiting for their love to come back, though they have strayed. The harmony lasts the entire song, yet often strays from the common 3rd spacing. Interestingly, in between the three sections of the song, for a coda, there is a different solo instrument including a piano and a flute.
And okay, fine. It might not be in the next Zach Braff movie, but it will definitely be on a lot of mixes for girlfriends.
