Woody’s Weekly Musings

by Woody on May 26, 2007

1. “Impossible Germany” is one of my favorite Wilco songs of all time. The guitar work on this song is top-notch and reminds me of the Wake Of The Flood Dead-era. Some people have shat on this album for not pushing the limits. I disagree. It takes a real genius to craft such fantastic music without any added bullshit.

2. By now you have read countless reviews on The National’s latest effort so I will forgo the full review as I am sure most are up to speed. But I felt the need to say that I feel that this will be their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; the one disc to take them to the next level in terms of notoriety. Their continued improvement will be rewarded.

3. Here’s a cool video from J. DiMenna. Actually, I don’t really understand the video but it’s a great song. http://youtube.com/watch?v=TKccXhX53wY

4. I received a disc in the mail last week from a band named The Dilettantes. The lead singer, Joel Gion, was a member of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Never being a huge fan of BJM, soI didn’t exactly rip the plastic off of this one. Almost by accident I gave it a listen one day and came away pleasantly surprised. Gion sounds a little like Lou Reed in his delivery which compliments their 60’s sound.

5. Check out Jason Isbell’s myspace page for three tracks from his forthcoming solo effort out on New West in July. Still coming to grips with Jason going solo. “Dress Blues” kinda has an “Outfit” feel to it. I always dug his stuff in DBT and these songs are no different.

6. Aquarium Drunkard has a couple of MP3s from Ryan Adams’ forthcoming release, Paper Tiger. Everybody Knows is a great song and Two is better.

7. Okkervil River announced that they would be releasing their follow up to their 2005 masterpiece, Black Sheep Boy on August 7th. Album is called The Stage Names. I heard a few tracks down at SXSW and I am about as excited about this release as any other in ‘07. The track listing is as follows:

1. Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe
2. Unless It’s Kicks
3. A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene
4. Savannah Smiles
5. Plus Ones
6. A Girl in Port
7. You Can’t Hold the Hand of a Rock and Roll Man
8. Title Track
9. John Allyn Smith Sails
