Woody’s Weekly Musings

Sometimes life gets the best of me and I neglect my duties here at HearYa. I’ve decided that I will begin a weekly feature that will just be some quick thoughts I know I’ll never put into a full post.

1. The National’s new disc, slated for a June release, is streaming on their myspace page right now at www.myspace.com/thenational. I have given it a couple of cursory listens so far and am enjoying it.

2. I read a bunch of reviews for Andrew Bird’s Armchair Apochrypha and it never fired me up to purchase it. I even sampled it on Bird’s website and it still didn’t reel me in. Oz told me that you have to listen to the whole thing to really dig it. Well, for once Oz was right. This is a tremendous album. Go get it. Full of unique instrumentation and texture.

3. Caught The Mother Hips at Schuba’s last week. I was tired, slammed at work, and too old to be out on a school night, but I couldn’t pass up a chance to see the Hips in Chicago. It was a rare treat. They made it more than worth my while, mixing tracks from the recent release, Kiss The Crystal Flake, and all their previous efforts including a stellar “Hey Emilie” and “Del Mar Station.” Tim and Greg still have it.

4. A few weeks back, Mofongo and I caught Big Timber at Ronny’s in Chicago. Ronny’s was a dump and the band that played before Big Timber could have been the worst musical act I have ever seen. I thought Mofongo was going to terminate our friendship after dragging him out in the rain, but Big Timber put forth a solid set in less than ideal circumstances. I really like these guys and hope that they start getting their due.

Andrew Bird – Heretics

Big Timber – Stained With Wine

Big Timber – The Ghost of Hart Crane

The Mother Hips – Grizzly Bear

The Mother Hips – Not so Independent

I’m listening to Bird right now and I can’t get over how good it is. I’ll also be catching The Mother Hips in Santa Cruz June 8th or 9th.

And for the record, I’m always right.
