What’s up with Canada’s music scene? I haven’t been this excited about Canada since I watched Strange Brew for the first time. I feel like a large majority of new, exciting indie bands hail from the great white north. Black Mountain is one of my favorites.
I had the pleasure of catching them at Schubas last year with Woody right after seeing Beck at the Riv and they blew us away. Stephen McBean gets lost in his music and brings in a storm with his guitar work and unique brand of space-rock.
Which brings me to Lighting Dust. Black Mountain’s Amber Webber and Joshua Wells create this Black Mountain offspring band and Jagjaguwar will be putting out the self-titled album on June 19th. Amber has some great pipes and the first track I listened to on their myspace page, “Listened On” is a winner.
Lightning Dust will be touring North America in June with The Cave Singers, but dates are still up in the air.
Black Mountain will also be firing up a new album in early 2008.

I couldn’t track down any Lightning Dust mp3′s, so here’s a track from Pink Mountaintops (Stephen McBean’s other band) and some nice stuff form Black Mountain.
Pink Mountaintops – New Drug Queen
Black Mountain – Modern Music (over at Slave to Shuffle)
Black Mountain Video – Live in London

Love Black Mountain. One of my favorite bands out there today. Don’t really enjoy Pink Mountaintops as much but I did like what I heard on the Lighting Dust myspacepage.
There is also another offshoot of Black Mountain called Sinoia Caves. I think its the keyboard player from Black Mountain’s side project. If I remember correctly, it has a little electronica mixed into the sound.
