For those not familiar with the Gore Gore Girls, they are a four-piece female band out of Detroit with their first album on Bloodshot Records slated to released in June. I have been listening to Get The Gore for about a month now and it is a great listen. It’s very raw in scope but there are moments of a polished product that offer a real nice blend. I’ve put this disc through numerous listens and checked out some pictures of their lives shows. I don’t know if the Girls want to sex me up or kick my ass, but in the end, who really cares as long as they’re delivering the goods. (ed. They want to kick your ass.)
The overall sound of the album encompasses a mixture of Detroit garage-rock with plenty of nice 60’s harmonies worked in to help take the edge off. Imagine The Ronettes as badasses in stiletto boots with the chops to rock your socks off.
Now on first glance, you might think this is a novelty act. The kick-ass cover of The Dixie Cups‘ “All Grown Up” dispels the immediate notion that the ladies lack any musical talent. Their songs are well-crafted and achieve the desired affect of giving you a charge in the ass. Put the Girls in jeans and sneakers and this is still a damn good listen, although the boots are appreciated.
A couple of the other strong tracks that don’t leave much the imagination are “Pleasure Unit”, “Fox In The Box” and “You Lied To Me Before.” If you enjoy the Detroit garage scene and want some hard-charging tunes for the summer, give the Girls a chance.
TechCrunch just broke the story that CBS acquired Last.fm for lots of dough.
Let’s all beat the crap out of Scott Stapp.
2 Comments Published by oz May 29th, 2007 in Music Musings.Since Scott Stapp was just arrested for domestic violence, I think we all owe it to ourselves to give him a taste of his own medicine. Use A to throw a left, D to throw a nasty right, and S to throw an uppercut. Spacebar allows you to block, but I doubt Stapp can […]

2 Comments Published by oz May 28th, 2007 in Concert Reviews.I’ve been trying to catch a Four Year Bender show since moving out to the Bay area and the stars were aligned today. It was Memorial Day and I had no plans, so I dragged the wife out of the house for some sunshine, gumbo and live country music. Yes, in San Francisco.
The El […]

1. “Impossible Germany” is one of my favorite Wilco songs of all time. The guitar work on this song is top-notch and reminds me of the Wake Of The Flood Dead-era. Some people have shat on this album for not pushing the limits. I disagree. It takes a real genius to craft such fantastic music […]
Top 10 Indie Covers of Rap Songs
44 Comments Published by oz May 25th, 2007 in MP3's, Music Musings. If you are an unknown band looking for exposure, I’m pretty sure all you need to do is cover a rap song. If you can work out an acoustic or bluegrass version, you’re bound to get people playing it at parties and dumb ass bloggers like me posting mp3’s on their sites. You might even […]
HearYa Session 3: Buffalo Killers
7 Comments Published by Kevin May 24th, 2007 in MP3's, HearYa Sessions. The most modern thing about the Buffalo Killers is their early 90s white conversion van, grayed out “racing” stripes and bottle opener on the back door included. They have packing it down to a science. Every guitar case, padded amp, and drum case, even both (yes both) kick drum cases, has its own […]
From the You’ve Got Way Too Much Time on Your Hands Department, Wired Magazine’s blog just posted step by step instructions to make your own iPod Nano case, complete with lanyard, from your bicycle tire inner tube. Color me lazy, but I think I’d rather pay $10 on a real product and do no manual […]
Dr. Dog Covers Architecture in Helsinki, Other News
1 Comment Published by oz May 23rd, 2007 in MP3's, Music News.I made a rare visit to Spin over the weekend and, nestled between in-depth coverage on Amy Winehouse’s upcoming wedding and breaking news about The Killers’s show cancellations due to Brandon Flowers’ scratchy throat, I ran across this great Dr. Dog track. It’s a nice take on Architecture in Helsinki’s “Heart it Races.”
