In case you haven’t heard already, Jason Isbell has left DBT. I ran across this video of “Easy on Yourself” from Grimey’s Record Store and realized how much I’ll miss him. I’ll be on the lookout for his solo stuff.
Meanwhile, Drive-By Truckers are gearing up for their Dirt Underneath Tour now. These shows are much different from the loud, rocking shows DBT fans are used to. They want to put more emphasis on the harmonies and the raw music and this video is apparently a good indication of how those shows will feel. Patterson had this to say:
“We also wanted to go out a do something a little different. Maybe revisit some songs in a different light, maybe try out some new stuff on a smaller scale, maybe tell some stories and sing some songs. Pull up some chairs, have a few drinks and tell some stories to each other and some friends. We know how to do that but just never really get around to it. THE DIRT UNDERNEATH is a show I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.”

I remember the first time I saw DBT. It was 3 years ago, and the one thing that stuck out is how much god damn Jack Daniels Jason was drinking. He was leaning up against the wall between songs as if he was on his last legs. But once they started up a new song, he sprang to life and played like his life depended on it. It was almost superhuman in a way.
The only other person I have seen put on a drinking/playing performance like that was Russell Baptiste of The Meters. The Meters played at a bar that I worked at and he was also drinking JD, but out of a wine glass for whatever reason. He was so fucked up between sets that he could barely string a sentence together. But, once he was behind the drums he kicked into gear and was amazing. Almost like its instinctual or second nature.
