Doctor A from Rotoworld gave us the heads-up about Dirty on Purpose from Brooklyn. He has been pimping them in his columns for quite some time and I finally heeded his advice and downloaded the album, Halleluha Sirens. Doc said that they have a Sonic Youth feel to them and I’ve read that they were a sort of shoegazer outfit. Usually not the description that gets me fired up to listen, but I respect Doc’s opinion.
I first listened to it on the way down to Austin for SXSW. I don’t know if I was just so excited to be flying without a kid on my lap but I was digging them right from the first listen. The first track, “No Radio”, comes at you with the prerequisite fuzzed-out guitars and dreamy vocals, but there are some nice horns and even catchier hooks in the tune.
The rest of the disc follows suit. There are a couple of songs that didn’t really grab me. They just kind of drifted by without me taking notice, but there were more than enough stellar tracks to make this a worthwhile purchase. Two of those tracks are listed below.
Doc saw them a few times opening up for Band of Horses and came away sounding like a schoolboy with a new crush. You can hear a few tracks from the album on their myspace page.
Dirty on Purpose - Light Pollution
Dirty on Purpose - Girls & Sunshine
Dirty on Purpose - Mind Blindness (From 2005’s Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow)
