Top 100 Indie Songs of All Time

by oz on February 14, 2007

After a challenge from a reader (thanks Tacos) and few weeks of deliberation, we have finally arrived at our top 100 indie songs of all time. We ranked in chronological order because ranking best to worst would have involved a group of people hurting one another.

To the best of our knowledge, all the songs below were originally released on an indie label. We tried to limit each artist to one song for variety. Obviously certain bellwether bands had two songs included because we just couldn’t decide.

There are some songs you expect to see and some you don’t. Most people haven’t heard of Golden Bear, but we can’t stop listening to it. Hopefully in a 10 years it won’t seem as out of place on the same list as Pavement.

We had input from many people and would like to offer thanks to Moish, Drinking Buddy, Nick, Pete, Kevin, Doctor A and Jim for their suggestions. I’m sure we still missed several great tracks and will hear about it shortly.

Hi everyone
Well there is my favourite band missing from that list…but I guess a lot of people don’t like them… dunno why!
SUEDE were brilliant at the beginning of the 90′s… songs like So Young, We are the pigs, Animal Nitrate, even Beautiful Ones and Trash brings me lovely memories of that adorable decade.
If anyone is interested, the albums Nude, Dog Man Star are the best, and then you have Coming Up which is a bit different to the first two albums. It’s worth a try! as there are many songs quite interesting.

Ryan March 9, 2009 at 11:04 am

I feel like this is a list of the third or fourth best song of each band.

Sonya March 22, 2009 at 10:47 pm

i think 30% of this list is shit, particularly the fact that motley crue is #1. and there’s no way ‘we are nowhere and it’s now’ is the best bright eyes song (listen to fevers & mirrors). but there’s a lot to agree with here too, like elliott smith, the shins, interpol, cat power, yo la tengo, etc. add more stuff like beirut and gogol bordello later (if this ever gets updated).

Kristina April 24, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Ok loved the list but like mentioned already where is oasis, radio head , modest mouse ,cat stevens (if you consider him indi),city and colour, the kooks, Razor light? And the White stripes, really? All in all not a bad list though. I liked seeing Arctic Monkeys, and Bob Marley, but Bob Marley is reggae not indi.

NELSON April 26, 2009 at 9:58 am

¿¡How could you forget “The Libertines” people!? i mean, is one of the best groups in history. Motley Crue????????? all the musicians in this band should be murdered XD

emily May 2, 2009 at 11:35 am

No strokes? Fail.

Anonymous May 9, 2009 at 4:05 am

This list is 50/50 hahah motley crue and NWA c’mon !! nothing against those artist but where is bands like the libertines, the strokes, who pioneered indie music from 2001-onwards also no OASIS !

peppy June 9, 2009 at 8:43 am

where the hell is brimful of asha?

Alex! June 9, 2009 at 1:44 pm

hey guys ,
ok some good artists but as mentioned before it isnt thier best work for example :

sufjan stevens – come on feel the illinoise??? how about “john wayne gacy jr ” and “chicago”

and
some of these would have been nice ;

JOY DIVISION , Duh i mean come on a indie list without “love will tear us apart”

RATATAT , Amazing electronic beats.

THE SUBMARINES , feel good soft indie.

FOALS , “cassius” or “baloons”

i can’t believe no-one has mentioned THE CURE .

apart from that good work oz
thanks.

HEATHER June 15, 2009 at 10:41 am

FUCK?!
This is bullshizzle.
come on, You’re the top on google searches. At least get it right. Fucks sake. Motley Fucking Crew?! … Are you pulling my chain?!
‘Specially as first. They’re a bastard Glam-Rock band. Jesus. Get a sense of genre.

Indieresearchwe July 19, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Ok, I agree with many of the comments made about the bands that aren’t included in this list, which I won’t go into.

“Indie” is short for independent, and so ‘Independent Record labels’ constitutes a viable system.
However, since when has ‘independent’ / indie been a sound, and how can you define this as a genre??? As many different genres are made up of independent artist… i.e anything from Elliott Smith to Dizzee Rascal….

Indie is just a term that has gotten out of hand… but for research purposes i’d appreciate anyone to explain this difference to me…

Ash July 21, 2009 at 3:45 am

I just can’t believe there’s no They Might Be Giants on the list and only 1 person commenting on their omission… Great to see Neutral Milk Hotel, Decemberists, Shins, Mountain Goats, Beulah on there though

moni July 28, 2009 at 10:38 am

okay list but what about the yeah yeah yeahs, killers, bloc party, the stones

Kalle Svensson November 12, 2009 at 9:43 am

OMG… That’s shit! Patrick Wolf is probably the biggest indie musician… I mean… motley crue? And What about Foals?.. Pure shit

c_m November 24, 2009 at 8:03 pm

MODEST MOUSE MODEST MOUSE MODEST MOUSE

craig December 25, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Wow an amazing list, I’m not alone! but there’s always one…no firehose?

Lauren January 3, 2010 at 6:56 am

Great list guys. Death Cab are one of my favourite bands ever, never mind just indie.

Aaron January 3, 2010 at 9:12 pm

i love all the people critisizing this list…i think it’s good..if you don’t like them, make your own damn list and your own damn blog..

pat February 18, 2010 at 10:43 am

Very solid list, but I would have had more from Beggar’s Group. I think it should have been Condor Ave. from Elliott Smith or Needle in the Hay as opposed to Between the Bars, but to each his own! What about Quasi, another Portland group. Animal Collective are another who had great songs from the early 00′s that would have been appropriate as well. Again, solid list and I look forward to downloading quite a bit from it!

Jed March 15, 2010 at 3:23 pm

Umm, no Silkworm? And to make it even worse, barely anyone mentioned Silkworm in the comments! I would definitely add Slow Burn, that song is just epic, but I guess a more popular Silkworm choice would be Don’t Make Plans This Friday or Couldn’t You Wait. (Both are amazing songs.) If you haven’t listened to Silkworm, you should definitely check them out. My favorite album is L’arje, but I don’t think too many people agree with me on that one.

Overall the list was alright, I have seen better. I like that you included an early Soundgarden track. Way too many people don’t give them a chance because of Black Hole Sun, which is too bad.

This is your opinion though, so I am sure to you it was an excellent list. If I had made this list it would probably just be filled with Silkworm and Superchunk. So you did better than I would have.

Jed March 15, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Oh, and Silkworm’s cover of Insider by Tom Petty is just AMAZING.

Darcy March 15, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Violent Femmes should be on this list.

d.raver1337 March 27, 2010 at 1:36 pm

the only thing that ever bothers me about all of the endless list just like this one on the web is when there is no modest mouse included. The indie music of the entire 90′s was defined by modest mouse. i may be wrong but i think a lot of people would agree. i just don’t think inide music would be the way it is today if never started making music.

Gustav May 3, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Hell-over-omica May 12, 2010 at 10:45 am

I agree with Darcy, Violent Femmes should be on this list.
And both “Where’s My Mind” and the entire “Surfer Rosa” album are from 1988, while “Monkey Gone To Heaven” is from 1989. Huge mistake for any Indie lover.

Mr. Wall June 22, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Black Moth Super Rainbow – (pretty much everything)
Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks
Horse Feathers – Curs In The Weeds
Iron and Wine – Flightless Bird
Kwoon – I Lived On The Moon

Passion Pit – The Reeling
Rogue Wave – Eyes

kevin June 23, 2010 at 11:05 am

Motley Crue is indie? LOL

David Shampo July 8, 2010 at 11:44 pm

What about Force by Nanobeats? That is a good song.

Jesus July 27, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Dam. This list kinda sucks. A lot.

Jagooar January 4, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Sorry hey-zeus, but this list is sick. Tons of my favs in there.

Emily January 23, 2011 at 1:50 pm

it seems that most people dont realise what chronological order means. they dont think motley crew is the best, its just the oldest. gawd, read the description

di January 31, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Very shitty list.
Its missing so many of the more amazing indie songs, but okay.

Brad February 1, 2011 at 8:15 pm

This list is ridiculous.
Motley Crue is good but they are in now way indie.
It’s metal….

Corey February 16, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Local Natives should be on here..
i LOVE them xD

Rodrigo L. February 27, 2011 at 9:54 am

I think: 1#. Where Is My Mind – Pixies – SurferRosa – 4ad – 1989

C McMillan March 9, 2011 at 7:36 am

Really??? Motley Crue?

BrotherBadSeed March 9, 2011 at 11:27 pm

Toadies – Possum Kingdom, originally released on Pleather. “I will treat you well my sweet angel. . . Do you wanna’ die?” Come on one of the greatest songs ever.
But I do love that Outfit – DBT is on there, it’s a great song.

David Stanly March 10, 2011 at 11:19 pm

NO BUILT TO SPILL! Nothing wrong with love? I mean seriously, that’s one of the landmark indie albums. And no Modest Mouse is a huge overlook for their decade-defining indie music. I don’t know how that can happen.

I know an indie list can’t please everyone but seriously, those are two touchstone bands.

Voldemort March 19, 2011 at 8:52 am

The Smiths, anyone?

[No Name] March 21, 2011 at 10:49 am

This is kind of a bad list..well because you don’t have very many good songs so maybe try again?

mena March 24, 2011 at 9:36 am

sparklehorse

Manolo Alonso March 30, 2011 at 1:40 pm

Sorry and sad not to see My Bloody Valentine, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, and so on…many of the list I think are unlikely to be considered Indie…anyways good effort, keepit goin’ maybe one day You’ll get it right….LOL hahahaha

Jelly April 1, 2011 at 2:03 pm

I totally miss The Smiths!! D=

chris April 10, 2011 at 5:54 am

This is a shit list. Half of the artists here are big label artists and Motley Crue? srsly? They were big glam metal bands. How on earth are they indie? *facepalm*

jf April 16, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Wow you guys are hilarious. Motley Crue and N.W.A. huh? Unless these are supposed to be two “ironic” Indie cover acts going by the same names which I’ve never heard of, your list is hard to take seriously.

Clio April 17, 2011 at 4:02 pm

I don’t know much about indie, but I really found this list amazing!!! Indie is amazing and magical!! It inspires me a lot!! Also I discovered great songs from the comments! However I think that this list contained some magical songs!!! Also for those who comment I don’t think that you would like to see in your own list comments like: shit or sucks, so be more kind and mature

:) April 24, 2011 at 6:20 am

i know its already been said but; Motley Crue?!psft.WHAT THE HECK.

Woody April 24, 2011 at 10:41 am

Motley Crue’s first album is awesome.

Roundy April 26, 2011 at 1:42 pm

The Crue are really good… Theatre of Pain soundtracked my last year of highschool… even though it was only 4 years ago, haha, PLus i saw some pavement in there… and mudhoney, very nice!
