Karen Dalton, Where have you been all my life?

Karen Dalton

Every once in a while I stumble across a song that blows me away. That happened to me yesterday. I had never heard of the late Karen Dalton, but her song “Katie Cruel” struck me. Dalton plays the guitar and long neck banjo and has a voice you can’t forget. Haunting blues and folk sounds from the beat generation.

Last Month, Light in the Attic Records released some of her work for the first time on CD entitled In My Own Time.

Bob Dylan had this to say about Karen Dalton and their days in Greenwich Village: “My favorite singer in the place was Karen Dalton. Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday’s and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed.”

I’m listening to the full album right now, for the third straight time. Take a moment to hear for yourself.

absolutely beautiful, pity there is so much empty music being lapped up, when there are people who sing with heart like this.

..although I’d prefer it without the violin, which sounds like it’s been added in after, and seems slightly chinese influenced? prefer the plain ol voice and instrument
