Hit Parader’s Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time

by oz on December 4, 2006

I’m not much of a metal guy these days, but I dabbled in high school. I heard about this list on the radio this morning and had to look it up. It’s bound for controversy. Freddy Mercury at #6? Scott Stapp and Fred Durst made the list but Billy Corgan didn’t? ROD STEWART AGAIN!!! This guy is haunting me lately.

I’ll further assume that punk bands are not included, since Joey Ramone didn’t make the cut.

Some of my personal favorites (other than Corgan) that are not on the list:

I just think that they shouldn’t have skip Joey Belladonna and maybe Josh Bush

Trent November 26, 2012 at 7:00 pm

I thought this was vocalists? Where the hell is Sebastian Bach? He’s got to be in there, cause he’s amazing and isn’t passed his use by date yet =P

Eduardo November 27, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I Like Freddie Mercury alot even though he is not Heavy Metal he sure seems Glam Rock/Heavy Metal, and I Love Chino Moreno of Deftones mainly really because of his strong Singing Voice/Screams but he is also Hispanic and Spanish Chino Moreno is Mexican and that’s perfect because I Am Puerto Rican and I guess me and him got something in common and that’s Hispanic Lol.

jasd November 27, 2012 at 3:53 pm

36- sebastian bach

laranja007 November 28, 2012 at 3:25 am

Y0u stupid americans always generalising everything. Mick Jagger Metal? Seriously? If you wanna make a list of the best singers in Metal, put ONLY Metal singers on it!!! This list should be named “The best singers in Rock”.

Eduardo November 28, 2012 at 11:27 am

Of course I Love Freddie Mercury of Queen but there are 3 Latino/Hispanic Americans on this list and being that I Am a Puerto Rican and proud of it those 3 Hispanic Rock Stars/Metal Artists on this list that I like are Zack De La Rocha of Rage Against Yhe Machines he’s Mexican, there is also Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D he is Part Mexican, and there is also Chino Moreno of Deftones he is Mexican which makes me proud to see us Hispanics on a Heavy Metal Hard Rock List I Love It.

Eduardo November 28, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Oh there is one more Latino/Hispanic Rock Metal Artist(s) I forgot that made this list as well and that is Tom Araya he is Latino and Hispanic as well he is Chilean that’s Latin just like me a Puerto Rican Lol.

Mandie! November 30, 2012 at 11:06 am

Where the hell is M Shadows??!?

jimbo jones December 1, 2012 at 5:31 pm

this whole list is complete ball crap!

Eduardo December 3, 2012 at 3:52 pm

I Love Freddie Mercury of Queen he has a Golden Voice span over Four-Octaves, and I Love How David Draiman of Disturbed Sings The Song Forsaken from the Queen of the Damned Soundtrack Draiman’s Voice on that Song was Percussive and Powerful and Amazing.

TonyF December 11, 2012 at 9:51 am

Josh Todd at 98? way too low

Nameguy December 17, 2012 at 7:46 pm

I see alot of people on here who are not heavy metal. David Bowie? Really?

Trucker December 21, 2012 at 4:50 pm

This should have been titled “100 musicians who’s names I know”

Arrowsend December 21, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Chester’s pretty low, he should be up there as well as Tankian. Some of these are very questionable to be perfectly honest. I wouldn’t consider some of them metal artist such s Mercury and Stewart.

Marc December 22, 2012 at 6:35 pm

I presume that this list is not to be taken seriously , as MICK JAGGER, JIMI HENDRIX, and MIKE SHINODA (between others) are considered as metal. Well fuck me if linkin park was to be taken as a metal band AT LEAST HAVE THE DECENCY TO INCLUDE THE SCREAMING DUDE IN THAT BAND, who isn’t MIKE but CHESTER BENNINGTON.
And btw dude phil anselmo is no. 37

Max December 23, 2012 at 10:23 am

David Coverdale (= GOD) 54 ???
Eric Adams of Manowar where is…

Eric December 27, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Okay, if you have Freddie Mercury, Geddy Lee, and Steve Perry (“Freddie, Geddy, and Perry”), then what the hell is Jon Anderson doing off this list???? Not a metal vocalist, but then again neither are the aforementioned Freddie, Geddy, and Perry!

Suchitha Dehigaspitiya December 28, 2012 at 10:56 am

Corey Taylor at #86? The legend should be in the top 10!

dimitris December 30, 2012 at 8:26 pm

FUCK! Corey Taylor at 86th place??? Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Dickinson and Phil Anselmo deserve better places. And Fred Durst and Mike Shinoda, WTF? They aren’t even metal.

fred January 1, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Sebastian Bach, #36. Doro didn’t make the list?

Johnny January 2, 2013 at 7:06 am

Wtf man come on …. Where is Jim Morrison ? Layne staley and kurt cobain had unique original voices that not many people can match ……and to the people that put rod Stewart in this list …. Rod Stewart ain’t rock you twat

dave January 2, 2013 at 10:58 am

Rod Stewart and Brett Michaels??? Are you fucking kidding me????Kurt Cobain who started the GRUNGE movement is now a best metal singer of all time???? WHAT?? (with mouth wide open) Most of the people on this list are not metal singers or even close to the genre. This just goes to show me that someone who had no idea what they were doing put this list together. WHAT A JOKE!!!!

Simon January 10, 2013 at 2:12 am

Obviously an American list as Ian Gillan is so low and Rod Evans is not even listed! Not metal vocalists… Rock vocalists. Stupid US Magazine Hit Parader… what woukld u expect! :)

De Angelo January 10, 2013 at 2:40 pm

How is James LaBrie from Dream Theater not on this list? And what about Mike Patton from Faith No More?

Max Steel January 14, 2013 at 5:12 am

fuck this list… it’s not metal at all… it’s done by dummies for dummies…

Barb January 16, 2013 at 2:40 am

Give me a break Rob Halford and Dio should be on top….along with Plant, Ian Gillian… then Goeff Tate and Bruce Dickson there’s no one close to any of these singers…the list should be done.

Geoff Collins January 16, 2013 at 2:59 am

So douchebags like Bret Michaels and Free Durst beat people like Dave Mustaine? What in fucks name is wrong with Americans?

Rainjong January 18, 2013 at 6:10 am

Seriously dude you need to listen all of them once again .. You Suck in ranking .. Please Go and Listen ..

Teebo January 21, 2013 at 11:47 am

Wait so David Bowie’s on the list and Chad Grau isn’t? And also as much as I like Dez (Farfara) Corey Taylor should be miles above him.

Daisy January 21, 2013 at 7:22 pm

I say that Wayne Static should be there. To me, he has this type of voice that is different from what I hear. Chester’s rank is too low, by the way. What about David Draiman of Disturbed, his voice is cool as well.

Dani January 21, 2013 at 8:14 pm

This list must be the greatest voices in no particular order… There is NO way that david drainmans voice is better than Corey Taylor’s… I have heard both bands live (all 3 if you count both coreys bands) you take the studio away from disturbed and they aren’t as good. The same with Fred durst… His voice is no where even close to coreys and he out ranks him by at least 40… Nonsense. Chester from linkin park deserves to be higher, and some how he’s out ranked by disturbed and Manson…. Maybe I’m biased to this all

rob January 25, 2013 at 4:33 am

worst list of metal i have ever seen
korn was in the top 10 fuck this

mcguinny January 25, 2013 at 4:34 am

really, worst “metal” list ive ever seen….

M January 26, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Oh no, take Fred Durst out and put Wayne Static in. He deserves it!

Mitch January 27, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Maynard James Keenan is below Cobain? I love cobain, but he has a voice like sandpaper, and where’s Daron Malakian? Dave Grohl? And since when was Bowie a “metal” vocalist?

Dylan February 5, 2013 at 11:53 am

58 Tom Araya needs to be higher

Sabrina. February 9, 2013 at 10:31 am

Mick Shinoda nem canta metal o.o

Edeline Vilanueva February 11, 2013 at 4:22 am

How come M. Shadows is not here.. LOL

baubauz February 12, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Christian Alvestam? ex Scar Symmetry?

Uzair February 14, 2013 at 10:14 am

How the fuck did you not mention Matthew Tuck????

chris February 16, 2013 at 1:32 pm

ripper owens at 97 and kurt cobain at 20?! switch them two round for a start

Tyler February 17, 2013 at 11:59 am

Where the hell is Layne Staley?!?!?!?!?

Sean February 18, 2013 at 4:19 pm

No Mike Patton?? He should be #1!

Dennis February 27, 2013 at 12:12 am

Who made this list? Half these guys n ever song the first metal note in there life! Cory Taylor #86 Are you high lol probably so! Anyhow somebody has no clue!

Mr.BlueSky March 1, 2013 at 10:22 pm

I agree with Robert Plant being #1, and ass much of an asshole as Axl Rose is, he is one hell of a singer, he should be top 10. Some of this list doesn’t even make sense, I like Mercury and Bowie, but them (among some others) should not be on this list.

By the way;

Pepper Keenan, Corrosion of Conformity

Phil Anselmo, Pantera

Are on the list.

Both on the list

Grant Hailey March 2, 2013 at 6:29 pm

No king diamond?

David March 3, 2013 at 11:00 pm
