Hit Parader’s Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time

by oz on December 4, 2006

I’m not much of a metal guy these days, but I dabbled in high school. I heard about this list on the radio this morning and had to look it up. It’s bound for controversy. Freddy Mercury at #6? Scott Stapp and Fred Durst made the list but Billy Corgan didn’t? ROD STEWART AGAIN!!! This guy is haunting me lately.

I’ll further assume that punk bands are not included, since Joey Ramone didn’t make the cut.

Some of my personal favorites (other than Corgan) that are not on the list:

Sorry, but 50+% of these guys are NOT metal in any way, and anyone who doesn’t think that Maynard beloings at no.1 by a LONG shot is completely stupid…FACT: Maynard is by far the best vocalist in ALL OF ROCK HISTORY… Steven Tyler??? Jimi Hendrix??? Gavin Rosdale (what a poof)… Hit parader is completely fucked in making this list, it’s completely off base.

Dex November 14, 2011 at 4:28 am

This is funny :)

Don’t know about you, but when I hear the words metal, I think of my favourite band Pantera which are metal Gods, and then I notice that there is a fuckin Serj T. before Layne of AiC, and most of all that THERE IS NO PHILIP HANSEN ANSELMO ON THIS LIST! He should stay instead of Halford on the second place!

Jose86 November 14, 2011 at 10:49 am

JAMES HETFIELD at #24?? Jon Bon Jovi? ROD STEWART? What ever happen to Kai Hansen/Michael Kiske (Helloween)?? Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarious)?? Eric Adams (Manowar)?? Tobias Sammet (Edguy)?? Definitely this doesnt represent for US a considerable or reasonable list of HEAVY METAL singers. I personally consider this list as a DISGRACE and on behalf of the heavy metal lovers this is disrespectful and shameful for us and even for the REAL heavy metal singers listed there. Bon Jovi better than Dave Mustaine??? Give me a fucking break!!! HAIL HEAVY METAL!!! FUCK STEWART, BON JOVI and co.

Luke November 14, 2011 at 10:53 am

Most bullshit list.. Yes a lot of them are (most) great singers but if you’re gonna name the list top 100 metal vocalists of all time then they have to sing metal music. David Bowie, JonBon Jovi, Eddie Vedder etc. are all great vocalists but do not sing metal. If it was top 100 rock vocalists of all time i would have no complaints

Ivan November 17, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Ozzy is the best

Ricky Dicky November 17, 2011 at 8:58 pm

i am mad about one thing in this list…..ROD STEWART. WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK. look me in the eye and tell me that Rod stewart is considered a metal vocalist and i will shoot myself.

Rod stewart, seriously?

Do you know who that is??

apparently not.

Xygnus November 18, 2011 at 11:23 am

Phill Anselmo is indeed on the list… at number 37…

chooonez November 18, 2011 at 2:41 pm

WTF? haha this is indeed funny.. this whole list is pretty much crap, it is true most are great singers, but not all sing metal.. and where is Christian Älvestam? or is he too good for this list? are gods not allowed or something?

Dantichrist November 21, 2011 at 1:04 am

I guess a list that has Freddie Mercury as “metal” would have James Hetfield that high over people that are much more talented. pfft! In the 80′s Hit Parade was a joke because the worshiped the flavor of the week calling them the “best”. I guess nothing has change in all these years! lmfao @ Freddie Mercury’s being metal….

Q November 21, 2011 at 9:32 am

of course i would only expect them to put up mainstream artists anyways. Lots of these people didnt sing metal, only classic rock. They are forgetting people such as Warrel Dane from Nevermore and Russ Allen from Symphony X. Rob Zombie, really? Horrible list is Horrible.

Ali November 22, 2011 at 5:56 am

that’s really funny some assholes like mike shinoda are in this list but you cant find mike patton!
this is really funny, this list must be revised!

andrew November 22, 2011 at 10:39 am

terrible. RANDY BLYTHE? not here. ROBB FLYNN? not here. DAVE WILLIAMS? unfortunately, not only here, but ranked above DAVE MUSTAINE for fucks sake. DAVE MUSTAINE. singer for MEGADETH. WHY would you put DAVE WILLIAMS above DAVE MUSTAINE? DAVE WILLIAMS does not deserve to be on ANY list, much less on THIS list, above DAVE MUSTAINE.

me November 23, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Just like the Rolling Stone greatest Guitar players of all time….
Where are the great voices… In this list i really Miss Russel Allen and Matt Barlow.

Eddy Vedder being that low?
Corey Taylor being that low?

No. 1 Robert Plant? He used to be considered the worst ever singer.

Fail list if i ever saw one.

Jay November 24, 2011 at 9:30 am

This list must have been arranged considering bias personal tastes and record sales. Maynard should be at the top of the list….Number 1 vocalist. No other artist that can effortlessly deliver perfect flawless tones in all vocal ranges.

Keep trying……this list sucks….

Metalguy November 25, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Well considering that there is no randy blythe and the fact that Hendrix was put ahead of Corey Taylor speaks volumes about how much Of a joke this list is

Scott November 26, 2011 at 1:38 am

WTH???? ok i know this is wierd guys but i truely think that Mark Slaughter should by in the list EVEN IN TOP TEN, who have ever heard of a singer that could sing higher notes? i mean this guy can go up to 5-6 octave, plus he could sing lower with raspy voices, he could sing almost anything and had hundreds of different voices, incredible power and range.. Just a underrated heavy metal, glam metal singer.. Plus this list is total crap.

Garrett November 26, 2011 at 1:36 pm

This list is just rock vocalists overall. So where is Jeff Buckley? He is the greatest singer in my opinion. He is often overlooked. Don’t hate on Rod Stewart either. The Faces/Small Faces were great. You guys need to open your musical horizon.

Steven November 27, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Steven Tyler has been the best one of all time.

JBeezy November 28, 2011 at 3:04 am

Why is Fred Durst on the list?
Where is Howard Jones from Killswitch?

fuuuuuuu November 29, 2011 at 2:16 pm

Ryan H December 2, 2011 at 4:55 am

Whan the hell is Steve perry doing at 28. Thats way to fucken low. He should crack the top 10 at the lowest and hes at least in my top 2 behind robert plant none of those guys u listed had the range nor controll or the uniqe voice steve had other the plant. anyway thats my only beef with the list

Eric December 2, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Definitely i disagree with this list. There are a couple of singers who are great and deserve to be in it, but Fred Durst is not one of them… WTF!!!??? Peter Tägtgren should be in it instead of this clown Durst…
For my taste, there should not be numbers on this list and there should not be people like Fred Durst and Gavin Rosdale…
Dickinson, Mustaine, Bon Scott, Halford, Robert Plant, Jagger, Anselmo……….. and so on… are great vocalist.

Mike December 4, 2011 at 2:14 am

Gotta agree with Dave. Maynard James Keenan is obviously the best rock vocalist of al time. Maybe he hasn’t had quite the success as some of the guys in front of him. But who cares. He has had enormous success without promoting himself at all. He has a perfect voice and is extremely versatile. Not to mention he actually writes brilliant lyrics about real stuff. Just listen to songs like “The Noose”, “The Patient”, “Sober”, “Forty Six and Two”, or “Judith” and tell me he isnt the best.

Mike December 4, 2011 at 2:16 am

Having said all that. Pretty cool to see him so high on the list!

Kieran December 4, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Im sorry but this isn’t right without Hansi kursch being in there and I cannot believe you would put ozzy ahead of Dio :\ I like ozzy but meh . and alot of these singers are rock singers.

Melissa December 4, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart needs to be #1 and he’s not even on the list! What a joke.

gunnar December 7, 2011 at 11:43 pm

I personally think …
1. Serj

2. Manyard

3.Jon Davis

4. Chino (before he messed up his vocal chords)

5. Kurt

Then the list would continue on as it normally would

adam December 9, 2011 at 10:53 am

Why is layne staley at 27. Hands down has the best voice on this list

Kevin December 10, 2011 at 10:15 pm

W T F W H Y I S C O R E Y TA Y L OR 8 6 ! ! ! THIS LIST SUCKS ALL MY FAVS ARE 40+ this sucks asssssssss!

Rafael Perez December 12, 2011 at 9:41 am

What about Geoff Tate?

ElHolios December 13, 2011 at 1:43 am

Hahahahah … this is funny…. Aerosmith and Queen metal… The Demon a vocalist…BAcking Vocals qualify…? Or is this huy just a serious KISS fan (they rock – but not harder than Manowar) Semantics…The funny thing is that Eric Adams is not here…. I mean 5 and a half octaves (at younger) and four (now) with opera recordings, collaborations with Sarah Brightman (Michael Turner can be here if Rod Steward is) and the vocalist of Manowar (oneof the greatest metal bands ever) with a 40 second high G pitch not here… My list will start something like:
1. Adams
2. Dickenson
3. Jonathan Davis
4. Kurt
5. Michael Aday (Meatloaf)
6. Angela Gossow
7. Timo Kotipelto
8. Liv Kristine
9. Peter Steele
10. Ripper Ownes
11. Cherie Currie

I will scratch Stewart, Freddy, JAgger (he can’t sing).. and more…!!

Ryley December 17, 2011 at 7:52 am

Chris Cornell is By far the best on this list, his vocal pitch is amazing (B1-G5 in full-voice, and up to E6 in falsetto) just look up chris cornell acapellas like “Jesus Christ Pose”, “Beyong the Wheel”, “Birth Ritual” amd “Like Suicide” on youtube!

Kreete December 17, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Freddie Mercury? ON A METAL VOCALIST LIST? Since when is Queen metal?

CTUKeyes December 17, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Wow. this is the worst list I’ve ever seen period. It stinks even worse than rolling stones top guitarist lists and that’s quite an accomplishment. No Rob Khan, no Matt Barlow, no Russell Allen, No Warrel Dane, no Mikael Akerfeldt, no Chuck Billy. I’ll stop now though I could go on. Anyway point made, worst list of all time.

Pys Daugh December 18, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Not that Mercury and Jagger aren’t great, but Hit Parader should damn well know they aren’t metal. This list isn’t an insult as much it is verification of the fact that there are very few places one can go without finding proliferation of pop culture highlighted by sell-outs like Hit Parader pandering to it.

sang December 19, 2011 at 1:23 pm

what is Fred Durst doing here ? I mean he is completly no talented , and why Corey Taylor is 86 ?????????? Corey deserves on much better place .

GrungeGod December 19, 2011 at 7:27 pm

Top five
1.Robert Plant
3.Bon Scott
4.Bruce Dickinson
5.Kurt Cobain
Most of these arent metal A better name for this list would be hard rock. I think the guy who made this was high as hell

Burk December 20, 2011 at 12:33 am

Where the FUCK is Howard Jones from KsE? He’s by far the best metal vocalist of all time. Besides that, this list is a fuckin joke.

greatest guitarist December 21, 2011 at 1:18 pm

Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to mention that I’ve truly loved browsing your blog posts. After all I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write once more soon!

Adi December 22, 2011 at 11:39 am

Where is Jorn Lande ????Why Bazz is so low ? Vince neil higher than Bazz ? Bullshit

Nick December 23, 2011 at 1:56 am

Chris Cornell should be number one. Plain and simple

elena December 23, 2011 at 3:00 am

no way! no mike patton in the list?!! come on! no comment to some of the name… completely out of mind for “best vocalist”…

Rafael Perez December 24, 2011 at 9:13 am

Don’t you think Michael Kiske should be in that list ?

Crab December 27, 2011 at 12:23 pm

how long did you look at this? phil anselmo and pepper keenan are both on the list (37 and 73)

Camilo "not" Moreno December 28, 2011 at 3:01 pm

Where is Mike Patton? Only be in #00 position without chance to all.

This is not a metal list….
A clown trick…

F for Fuckers

Smo December 29, 2011 at 5:04 pm

and where the hell is Dero Goi,Roy Khan??

Slavo January 1, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Plant is great, ok, i love Metallica too, but Hetfield is a singer? haha, and talking seriously where is Mike Patton? do not know who made that list…

The All Knowing January 1, 2012 at 8:37 pm

This list is shit, If it ranks Serj, It should Rank Maynard James Keenan Higher since Tool is the band that inspired Chevelle and SOAD. Also how the fuck does this list not have the two deepest voices in meta!? TILL LINDEMANN AND PETER STEELE. What the fuck was the idiot who made this list thinking when he/she added hard rock vocalists, thats not even metal. If you’re going to make a list of Metal vocalists, the least you can do is put metal vocalists on it. Lol

Mike January 2, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Right on the money with Robert Plant that dude is a god! Friggin love Chris Cornell also. I think they did an ok job up to about 25-30. The rest of the list BLOWS. They got a lot of good guys but the order is really skewed come on Fred Durst before Corey Taylor? Marilyn Manson before Rob Zombie? And yea some guys shouldn’t even be on the list (i.e. Bon Jovi, Stewart etc.) I’ll stand behind Hendrix cuz of songs like Voodoo Chile and Foxey Lady those songs have some impact and he’s my favorite rock musician of all time after Plant \m/

alfred beilin January 2, 2012 at 5:00 pm
