Hit Parader’s Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time

by oz on December 4, 2006

I’m not much of a metal guy these days, but I dabbled in high school. I heard about this list on the radio this morning and had to look it up. It’s bound for controversy. Freddy Mercury at #6? Scott Stapp and Fred Durst made the list but Billy Corgan didn’t? ROD STEWART AGAIN!!! This guy is haunting me lately.

I’ll further assume that punk bands are not included, since Joey Ramone didn’t make the cut.

Some of my personal favorites (other than Corgan) that are not on the list:

Crobadass December 24, 2009 at 7:42 am

there is one big and important peace missing, and that peace is Brad Delp.

Crobadass December 24, 2009 at 7:43 am

excuse me, piece*

Crobadass December 24, 2009 at 7:48 am

ofc if we were talking about top 100 rock vocalists of all time then Brad should be in top 100,not here (can’t find anywhere on the net Delp in top 100,shame shame).

th3wick3d December 27, 2009 at 12:19 am

Hansi Kursch is not even there, matt barlow is not there and- okay…matbe theyve never heard of them…. but still why the hell is the ripper at 97 then??

simen December 27, 2009 at 6:17 pm

not even half of these vocalists is metal singers!!!

Matt L. December 28, 2009 at 9:29 am

I’m pretty happy with where Serj Tankian is. Actually maybe he and Trent should swap, then it’d be perfect.

What!?!? December 28, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Really!?!? Amy Lee is only #69!?!?!? She has SO much more talent than any of these people. Maybe that’s just MY opinion… but seriously. She has a beautiful talent, and everyone else on here is just considered a ‘rocker’. Lame. She deserves at least the Top 10. I’m disappointed with whoever created this list.

P.S.
Fred Durst doesn’t even belong on this list.

Musicismylife January 3, 2010 at 12:03 am

guys, this list goes by influence of the genre, so that’s why you’re seeing many artists who don’t fit the metal category. led zeppelin is a HUGE influence to metal, in fact, the term heavy metal was coined to describe the sound of led zeppelin, so that’s why robert plant is top of the list. just because many of these guys don’t use heavily distorted guitars and heavy pounding bass riffs doesn’t mean they didn’t influence metal

chrys January 3, 2010 at 4:15 pm

more than half of these artists aren’t metal, and have never claimed to be.
also note the decided lack of truly extreme vocals. this is more of a rock list than anything else. it belongs in the suburban emo kid’s guide to metal.

TaKLaMyEggS January 5, 2010 at 12:16 pm

WTF, mike shinoda is on the list and some other vocalists from metal bands were not…what a gay…LOL..

AceOfSpade January 6, 2010 at 11:36 am

Hey! WTF!? No Mike Patton :( thatsa disgrace man! Same as Bruce Dickinson and James Hetfielf, i mean how the hell Amy Lee got there and they werent even on the list! urgh! At least unexpectedly zach de la rocha was there so im happy =D

Chris January 6, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Since when has David Bowie been metal and even if he was, why the hell is he 12 ranks above dez fafara. This list is a bloody disgrace.

Daffy January 7, 2010 at 4:19 pm

the only thing I know is that Layne Staley should be higher …

fucking Jonathan davis and Kurt kobain higher??

what the hell???

Layne was one of the best ever!!!

anna January 7, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Itchy January 10, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Where is Randy Blythe, Zakk Wylde, Chris Barnes, Alexi Laiho, Max Cavelera, Chuck Schuldiner, Dez Fafara, or Mikael Akerfeldt?

What kind of list is it if they dont have names like these?

Shangshaptak January 11, 2010 at 8:44 am

LOLZ…….half of the guys listed never were, nor will ever be identified as heavy metal vox. The worst list ever. Why not put in Britney Spears and and Michael Bolton too?

sam January 11, 2010 at 1:56 pm

where the hell is maike patton, and what is the criteria for tpicking these up!!?!?!?!?

nigel January 12, 2010 at 9:25 pm

My favorite is André Matos. He did a really good job when he was Angra’s lead singer. I like Iuri Sanson, who is Brazilian as well as André, from Hibria. Edu Falaschi is pretty good too.

Thanawath January 12, 2010 at 9:51 pm

It’s not reliable list.

Indeed, it was ranked by American.

Who can tell me where Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Michael Kiske (Helloween) and Graham Bonnett (Rainbow/Alcatrazz) is?

Thanawath January 13, 2010 at 4:48 am

This is not a reliable list.

Indeed, it was ranked by the American.

Who can tell me where Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Michael Kiske (Helloween) , Graham Bonnett (Rainbow/Alcatrazz), and Joey Tempest (Europe) is?

However, even the list was ranked by the American, they still forgot Joey Belladona (Anthrax).

X.X January 22, 2010 at 2:28 pm

This is a poser list. Most of these are not real metal bands.

Chriz January 23, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Sebariel January 27, 2010 at 9:33 am

Where is Jeff Buckley? Jacoby Shaddix? Adam Gontier? Jared Leto? Adam Nergal? Gerrard Way? etc
That list is pathetic.

Surge January 30, 2010 at 5:02 am

Why there hell is Eddie Vedder on here?

Aleksander Bjerke January 31, 2010 at 8:17 am

This list is completely bull shit! 60% of the people on the list doesn’t even sing in metal bands. Chris Cornell.. Jimi Hendrix.. these are not metal vocalists…

Stephen February 2, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Where the f*ck is Layne Staley!

Phil February 3, 2010 at 11:59 am

COREY TAYLOR IS THE BEST OF ALL TIME

vladan February 5, 2010 at 6:19 am

I don’t know for you guys, but Bruce Dickinson is THE BEST HEAVY METAL SINGER FOREVER! Steve Marriott is singer of the blues groups : ” Humble Pie ” and ” Small Faces “, so why is he on this list? Where is Danzig? And for those who don’t know, Biff Byford is singer of Saxon. I agree that Rob Halford is good singer ( remember ” Painkiller”). Udo Dirkschneider is singer of ” Accept “. Lemmy should be higher. BUT, AFTER ALL, DICKINSON IS THE BEST AND HE SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE.

me February 6, 2010 at 1:57 pm

axl rose???he is hard rock not heavy metal…and marylin manson is not better than tom araya this list sucks…ozzy, dio, serj, araya, hetfield they are great…I would like to see daron malakian and dave mustaine too

Dero February 18, 2010 at 2:27 am

Look I know these lists are hard to please everyone but Brett Michaels way ahead of David Coverdale? Should the guy even be on the list?

mohaned February 18, 2010 at 6:36 pm

eric adams from manowar is much better than alot of vocalists in this list and dio should be higher

Vegar February 20, 2010 at 6:36 pm

WTF! This isn’t even metal singers. Robert plant? Steven tyler What the hell

B-Ray February 21, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Most of the list is solid but it is a lie that Dee Schnider is a better heavy metal vocalist than Corey Taylor. Twisted Sister or Slipknot, give me a break.Do me a favour and go on Youtube and listen to We’re not gonna take it by Twisted Sister and then listen to Heretic Anthem by Slipknot and you tell me .I am only 14 and I even know it is a load. If Rod Stewart is on that list I don’t see any reason for Barry Manillo or Adam Lambert to be in the top 20 and where is David Draimen from Disturbed. PLEASE COMMENT !!!!!!!!!!!

Sashajade February 22, 2010 at 5:09 am

Why, may I ask is David Draiman only number 42? Surely he should be closer to the top 20… AT LEAST. Also, Rob Zombie, Amy Lee and Christina Scabia should be higher thna thy are; crediting everything they have done within the metal scene.

Rob Stewart??? Metal Vocalist??? Who wrote this list…

B-Ray February 22, 2010 at 4:12 pm

My apologies on David Draiman

Baller McSquishy February 24, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Axl Rose? Not really, he was the least talented of the group.

I can actually understand Rod Stewart. Original heavy metal was not nearly as intense as it has come to be today. When it first debuted it was much closer to blues (Black Sabbath was originally a blues band) So yes Rod Stewart when he was with the Faces could qualify. Them, Zeppelin, and deep purple were the beginning of Heavy Metal. Just because they don’t scream and just pound on drums doesn’t mean they aren’t heavy.
And have any of you every listened to any of queens early stuff? Without a doubt metal, they eased in to glam rock.

Gartha February 25, 2010 at 7:35 pm

what the..!!! In first place there many fucken singers that doesnt sing and some more that doesnt even sing:Ñ soo!!!
where the hell are kakko, matos, falaschi, kiske, kotipelto ans somoe more fuckenn ass singers???? why is steven tyler, jimmy hendrix and david bowie there?? FUCK!!!and amm there was a time that plant, mercury and some other more played metal so they can be here!!!
PD death metal screamers doesn sing:Ñ…they scream fuck

Nero February 27, 2010 at 2:43 am

alright, whoever made this list has no clue or just ignores that this is about metal and not about rock in general. and who the fuck is Udo Dirkschneider – I’m German and I even never heard of him or his bands. And please show me any metal songs by Jimi Hendrix, that would be cool :)

Jigga February 27, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Blashphemy!

shiftY March 5, 2010 at 9:31 pm

james hitfield should be # 1!!

luc March 6, 2010 at 11:40 am

jesus, jimmy Hendrix? He was michael jackson with a guitar. ozzy sucks but at least he’s metal. oh yeh, what about Matt Tuck from BFMV. and corey taylor schould be in top ten. Cus they do the growling and the screaming which defines metal. Next year’s list’ll probably include hannah montana.

METAL FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

Ty March 7, 2010 at 2:07 am

How you can have someone like Fred Durst on the list and yet over look Hansi Kursch is beyond me. Proving to be yet another list that doesn’t take breadth and scope and range of any individual singer and instead bases it off of soem ungodly largely mainstream list.

Smylez March 8, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Congratulations people! You have all been arguing about the same thing for about four years, and most of you even did it with half-assed spelling.

Dani Filth, from what I have heard should be higher. I understand why Plant is up there, but truthfully why he is THAT high? I believe the formula they used for this list is based on talent, influence, and legacy, which explains why half of these people are up here at all(Fred Durst caused quite a storm with his open slandering of Slipknot, a dick-move that will make him go down in history as one of the biggest idiots in music, along with many of his clumsy, heavy-handed antics that make everyone cover their eyes in shame.) Chris could outstrip Plant any day, but Led Zepplin still was one of the largest influences of all metal genres in the first place. Corey Taylor and David Draiman should be a little higher, as they both are very talented and charismatic front men of two very competent modern bands. M. Shadows was completely missed from what I’ve seen, and that’s a damn shame. Dio is deserving of the top ten, as he has one of the most potent voices in all of metal. Why isn’t Jack Black up here, I wonder? This list is very Rock heavy because of the fact that the actual line between metal and rock is very blurry, near impossible to tell where one begins and the other ends. Another missing bit may be Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace, as although he is a very basic song writer, he still has an impressive voice and has a nice little penchant for melody. James LaBrie is a very under appreciated vocalist, as with the rest of Dream Theater, and has probably been overlooked because of a relatively small fan base. Glenn Danzig is another anomaly, as he is quite talented. Hendrix was stoner rock and, from what I hear, a terrible voice. Cobain should not be overlooked, although his vocals were poor, he and the rest of Nirvana was still the main influence (with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam) of Grunge, which is the infusion of punk and heavy metal. Jonathan Davis brought Nu Metal to the world, to the happiness of some and the chagrin of the rest. Linkin Park pretty much only put a much more rap influenced twist into Nu Metal, to many of the metal haters’ delights. Keenan does deserve a little more credit, although Tool is not really my cup of tea, due to his very well thought up works. I do not really recall a time when David Bowie was even rock, so he is the real anomaly here, though I may be mistaken.

Now comes my little ideas: Cross out Durst and Bowie. Durst even shames the already shamed Nu Metal genre. Bowie was always one of the greatest pop sensations, but that is all he has made himself stand out for: Pop.

Amy Lee and Ms. Scabbia should switch places. They are both beautiful and talented, but Ms. Scabbia is a tad more able than Amy, even though she lacks the level of fame Amy has achieved.

The artists missing include, but not limited to: Chad Gray(Mudvayne & Hell Yeah), J. Loren Wince(HURT, they are not truthfully pure metal, but they are very competent rockers, either way), Jame LaBrie(Dream Theater), and Till Lindemann(Rammstein)

I really hope this was helpful to some of you who were not satisfied with this list and at least a little disappointed in the manner of three quarters of the comments that I have seen(Believe me, I’ve seen enough of these in my hour of reading.) and hope that this puts this all back in perspective.

POTTLEDEE March 12, 2010 at 6:29 pm

For starters some of these singers arn’t even metal such as mick jagger, bon jovi, roger daltery, jimi hendrix etc. & Ripper at number 97, you must be joking he should be at the very least top 5. Whoever composed this list obviously didn’t think it through.
