Hit Parader’s Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time

by oz on December 4, 2006

I’m not much of a metal guy these days, but I dabbled in high school. I heard about this list on the radio this morning and had to look it up. It’s bound for controversy. Freddy Mercury at #6? Scott Stapp and Fred Durst made the list but Billy Corgan didn’t? ROD STEWART AGAIN!!! This guy is haunting me lately.

I’ll further assume that punk bands are not included, since Joey Ramone didn’t make the cut.

Some of my personal favorites (other than Corgan) that are not on the list:

fred durst ahead of corey taylor? this list does suck

Hawdaddy July 19, 2009 at 10:32 am

Okay, 50% of this list isn’t remotely metal or acceptable. The writer of this “list” should be forced to listen to nothing but metal than a week and rewrite this list. It’s ignorant and unacceptable to have grunge and blues rock considered metal. And a bit of the metal vocalists on this list aren’t that good.

(Mike Patton anyone?)

ernest July 19, 2009 at 4:43 pm

WTF????? where´s Howard Johnson from Killswitch Engage !!¿?¿¿¿

James Johnson July 20, 2009 at 9:58 am

Colin July 20, 2009 at 8:12 pm

What Fucknut made this list?

Dan July 24, 2009 at 1:03 am

This list is worthless without Layne Staley. He’s easily in the top 10 if not top 5.

ARCSERAPHIM July 24, 2009 at 2:43 pm

WHAT THE FUCK NO POWER METAL VOLCALISTS!!!!!!!!

devin July 26, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Tiby July 27, 2009 at 5:31 am

Wtf? Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda and Fred Durst as metal vocalists? Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park are not even real nu metal like SLipKnoT or KoRn. They are just rap ROCK. And where is Till Lindemann. He is more metal than these three poser.

dani July 27, 2009 at 4:46 pm

i think that the top 10 is ok but then its just bullshit, come on Amy Lee? that bitch is just some gothic wannabe, so is marilyn manson, sammy hagar over david lee roth?; kurt cobain and eddie vedder? that’s grunge, people! bruce dickinson, james hetfield and dave mustaine should be way over the list, and WTF are mick jagger, joan jett, jimi hendrix, anthony kiedis, david bowie, scott weiland and freddy mercury doing there? ok jimi is da shit, but come on he died before metal was even born, this list is just nonesense, the title should be something like the best singers in rock history, cuz there are really good frontmen from a lot of rock genres, but certainly not just metal

I am the man with no name. Either that, or I forgot again. July 28, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Although I do agree that this list is, on the most part, shite; just wanted to clear soemthing up. Freddie Mercury can appear on this list as a vocalist for Queen. Queen did mostly metal back in the early 1970′s before the band changed style and got reconition. I don’t think it’s enough for position 6. But either way, it’s enough to apper on the list in the first place. Maybe around position 30 is fair.

Bobetta July 31, 2009 at 3:56 pm

I agree in that over haf the people in this list aren’t heavy metal, but in the defense of those who aren’t heavy metal on the list, I must say you shouldn’t call them bad since they’re on the list. It isn’t that they chose to be included on the list. If anything, blame the author not the people included. It’s also key to keep an open mind to other music tastes. What may be shit to you may not for others, and as shown multiple times, many of you have no care for others’ opinions.

Some suggestions for the list August 1, 2009 at 8:43 pm

You know, I agree with this list a lot. Except, I think it needs a little revamping. Here is how the top ten should really look:

1. Joe Jonas.
2. Nick Jonas.
3. Kevin Jonas.
4. LL Cool J.
5. Jonathan Davis.
6. Pete Wentz.
7. Miley Cyrus (Have you heard her new single? So metal.)
8. Robert Pattinson.
9. Kanyeezy.
10. Mickie Mantle.

I sure hope the editors take my new list into consideration. Thank you for your time.

TheSilverDevil August 1, 2009 at 8:54 pm

C’mon guys what the hell. That list sucks. Here is a tr00 metal list:

1. Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day)
2. Brendon Urie (Panic! At The Disco)
3. Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy)
4. Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth, most metal band ever)
5. Justin Timberlake (N*Sync and his own awesome solo stuff)
6. Jonathan Davis (Korn. I lied before. This is the most metal band)
7. Frankie Palmeri (Emmure. I have to stop lying. These guys are BRUTAL)
8. Corey Taylor (Slapnut… I MEAN SLIPKNOT)
9. Serj Tankian (SoaD. Seriously, metal as hell!)
10. Jigglypuff (Guaranteed to attack your church and crush your holy priest)

joe August 2, 2009 at 7:41 pm

korn korn korn korn korn korn will never die fan since 94 im not one of those little kids im 26 and backing up korn till i die

Manuel August 3, 2009 at 7:15 am

Mick Jagger is better singer than Anselmo (Pantera) or Bon Jovi? O_o
My cat sings better than him. I respect the band, but technically, Mick Jagger does not sing, he barks, and no one can deny it with an objetive reason.
I love Nirvana, but Cobain sucks singing. It’s like saying The Ramones made excelent music… Love them! but they made the most simple and plain of music

Manuel August 3, 2009 at 7:17 am

Sorry SilverDevil, but no way anyone you listed beats Mercury or Dickinson

Kalle August 3, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Ian Gillian only 43rd? Fail >_<

Maciolos August 4, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Where is Mark Chaves from Adema? Till Lindemann from Rammstein?

madketz August 5, 2009 at 7:52 am

WHERE IS MAX CAVALERA!?!?!?!? Like 20 % of “singers” from this list are influenced by his voice and music… to put jonathan davis, mike shinoda, chester, fred durst or chris cornell in front of him!!?!?!? now that’s just rude… that’s really rude… c’mon!!!!!!!!!!!

NM August 7, 2009 at 9:00 am

THIS LIST SUCKS
CHESTER BENNINGTON LISTED 46 ???!!!!
CMONN HE SHOULD BE LISTED NUMBER 1
HIS VOICE IS TRULLY AWESOME..
AND HE IS LISTED AFTER MARYLIN MANSON..
THIS IS A VOCALIST, NOT A BAND OR WHOS GOT MORE HISTORY…
I MEAN, KURT COBAIN ISNT A GREAT SINGER, HE WAS THE FACE OF NIRVANA, AND THEY GOT HISTORY..
THIS LISTS SUCKS

OctaSanitavarium August 8, 2009 at 10:39 am

WHAT? No James LaBrie?!

I can’t agree with this list until i see him on it >.<

JJ August 8, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Okay, what? WHY IS GEOFF TATE AT 14, DAMMIT!?!? WHY!?!?!?!

I mean, I love Steve Tyler as much as the next person, but I personally believe he isn’t all THAT great. Yes, Aerosmith is epic, but are they metal?

No, I think not. Queensryche/Geoff Tate should be at #3. Yeah,

Also though, half of these groups are not metal. They may have been considered metal at one point by the general stupid public, back when they first started, back when what they were was the hardest rocking mainstream music the industry had to offer, but still, the fact remains, LED ZEPPELIN IS NOT METAL. THEY MAY HAVE

JJ August 8, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Gah. Excuse me.

- BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS OF ALL TIME, BUT NOWADAYS, AND THIS IS WHAT MATTERS, THEY ARE NOT CONSIDERED METAL. And that goes for all of the rest of them too. I didin’t mean to take my anger out on mainly Led Zeppelin. The only people who consider them metal were either more mainstream or misguided.

Also, there are more female metal vocalists. Why no Simone Simmons, Tarja Turunen, Sharon den Adel, Anette Olzen (she’s just a replacement for Tarja though), Lissa Johansson, Floor Jansen, and Ailyn? Although, I personally prefer the other Sirenia vocalists. All of whom I have listed here are amazing, and they all deserve to be here.

This list, I realize, is only compromised of more and semi-popular metal groups, and the other subgenres of metal are ignored.

For example, Hansi Kursch. He is the singer of Blind Guardian. Blind Guardian is a power metal group. Hansi has one of the best damn voices I’ve ever heard. I’m serious. And also, Marco Hietala, from Nightwish. Speaking of, why aren’t any of the Nightwish vocalists on here? Or Within Temptation/Sharon? Symphonic/gothic metal is still metal, and most of it is more metal than what you’ve listed.

Okay, then. All I have to say is: You showed poor judgement with this list. You may have been putting somewhat decent singers in places where they shouldn’t be because of the band’s reputation. Example: Mick Jagger. Some of them aren’t even metal at all. Example: STILL Mick Jagger. And other metal singers (Marco Hietala; Hansi Kursch) from other non-mainstream metal genres are overlooked. Symphonic metal is still metal. Truth is most of these people are not metal, some more have no talent, the rest shouldn’t be here, and none of them are in the right places.

JJ August 8, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Oh, and no Eric Bloom? Blue Oyster Cult could be considered heavy metal. Yes, I know I’m sounding like a hypocrite, but still. Take off the Rolling Stines and put on BOC.

JJ August 8, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Rolling Stones, I mean.

zack August 8, 2009 at 10:05 pm

bruce dickinson is the greatest metal singer

Mike August 10, 2009 at 10:41 pm

This has got to be the worst list of anything ever written.. well, maybe a few Rolling Stone lists are a little worse.. but come on! It’s almost like they went through someone’s Ipod and snagged every song in the “Most Listened To” artists section.

I think they should allow an online voting session so that people who actually listen to music can have an input.

max August 11, 2009 at 11:31 am

The fact that Mikael Ã…kerfeldt from Opeth isn’t anywhere on this list shows how uninformed the creators are. This should have been the top 100 hard rock vocalists of all time. Rod Stewart? Fred Durst? Robert Plant???? Led Zeppelin isn’t metal and to consider its vocalist the top “metal” vocalist of all time isn’t just blasphemy, it’s straight up wrong.

erik August 14, 2009 at 11:58 pm

Diamond Dave blows Sammy away somebody must be high

Kai August 15, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Erm. How is Dani Filth on the same list as Robert Plant?

HeadBanger August 16, 2009 at 6:44 am

Vocalists of Linkin Park before Blackie Lawless? Are you out of your fucking mind?

MetalFan August 17, 2009 at 6:28 am

mark chavez should be in the list! Corey taylor shouldn’t be in the end of the list. Jonathan davis rocks! (if someone doesn’t thinks he sings metal just search on the internet, korn is a new metal band and unlike some people say new metal isn’t less metal than heavy metal, it’s just different)

Altair August 18, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Philip Labonte, Josh Gilbert, Matthew Charles Sanders aka. M. Shadows and Matthew Tuck.

Seriously these people should be way high with Philip on the top. Gilbert maybe a bassist but has an amazing clean voice.

it's been said already August 19, 2009 at 10:59 am

but i don’t understand why the majority of the people on this list are on this list.
chris cornell? really? he’s got a sexy voice and all but he’s not metal. he’s grunge/alternative, kay?
and ARE YOU SERIOUS amy lee?

why has nobody fixed this list yet? it’s been years people, come on! do something, for metal’s sake!

Ravenspawn August 19, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Kurt is my hero, but he was grunge, not metal and therefore should be on greatest Rock vocalists, not Metal. and wtf with Ville and Dani being below crap artists like Fred Durst and Amy Lee? they were robbed!

Nelson Fields OVERDRIVE August 20, 2009 at 8:51 am

ITS OKAY FOR ME BUT IM PRETTY SURE THAT THE #1 HAS TO BE STEVEN TYLER, BECAUSE HE CAN HIT HIGHER NOTES THAN ROBERT PLANT AND AFTER STEVEN THE #2 HAS TO BE AXL ROSE
AND DONT FORGET ABOUT FREEDIE MERCURY THAT OBIOUSLY HAS TO BE #3 =D ITS JUST AN OPINION OK

Ignativs August 24, 2009 at 3:19 am

Mike Patton is not on the list? Ok, this list is nuts.

mlxp August 24, 2009 at 8:34 am

omg, this list is beyond lame, next thing you know, Criss Angel would be on for “Mindfreak”

Tasha August 29, 2009 at 5:01 pm

I have to disagree with spot 1, it belongs to Kyo (Dir en grey) and Jonathan Davis, best singers ever.
Oh and why isn’t Till Lindemann on this, seriously? Also, why is Serj Tankian before David Draiman? I find David’s voice much better.

the voice of metal August 30, 2009 at 12:30 pm

I can not belive! You put Amy Lee on the list and you forgot about probably the best metal voice ever, her metal majesty TARJA TURUNEN?! Anselmo in front of Coverdale?! c’mon!!!

the voice of metal August 30, 2009 at 12:43 pm

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, where the f…k is MICHAEL KISKE?! Voice pure as tear! 5 fuckin’ octaves vocal range!!! wtf happened with your brain?! and your ears?!

angel with scabbed wings August 30, 2009 at 1:03 pm

dude ,
wtf
how can you critize marilyn manson ,
dudes a fucking genuis .
and his vocal range and that tremble in his voice is amazing ,
to me deff number one if not the greatest jeshh go with something must people wouldnt think is the obvious choice . and to have some one like bret michaels ahead of marilyn manson is completley upsird.. axl rose , alice cooper and sebastian bach deff need to be higher on the list , sebastian bachs voice is so heavy and electrfying.
